The physical competitions are that are fought for their objectives and the challenges they bring. They are an integral part of every culture , both past and present. However, every cultural tradition has its unique interpretation of sport. The most helpful terms are ones that define the connection between sports and games, games and competitions. "Play," wrote the German theorist Carl Diem, "is purposeless activity, for its own sake, the opposite of work." Human beings do what they must and they play because they wish to. Play is autotelic, that is, it is a goal-driven activity. It is a voluntary activity that is not compelled. Children who aren't able to comply with the demands of their teachers or parents to play the soccer game (soccer) are not actually involved in an activity. Professional athletes are not who's sole motive is to earn a salary. In real life in the real world motives are often multi-faceted and sometimes difficult to establish. An unambiguous definition is still essential to make practical decisions regarding what is and isn't an instance of play.
There are at minimum two types of games. The first is free and free of constraints. Examples abound. A child spots an unflat stone, grabs it upand then launches it into the pond's waters. Adults realize in a chuckle that he's made an unintentional joke. The action is not premeditated and both are somewhat free of constraints. The second kind of game is controlled. There are rules for determining the legality of actions and what aren't. The rules convert spontaneous playing into games, and can be defined as regulated or rule-bound game play. Leapfrog, chess "playing house," and basketball are all games. Some of them have relatively simple rules, while others are controlled by a more complicated set of rules. In reality, the rules for games like basketball are a long number of pages.
As games, basketball and chess differ from playing leapfrog or playing in the house. The two games that are competitive, while the other two aren't. You can be crowned the winner of a basketball match however it doesn't make sense to inquire who won a leapfrog game. In terms of chess, it is true that basketball are games.
Another distinction divides games into two categories which are ones that require the minimum level of physical ability and those that don't. Shuffleboard is an excellent example of the former. The board game Scrabble and Monopoly can be used to illustrate the second. It should be recognized that even most basic sports, like weightlifting, demand a bit of concentration, while other sports, such as baseball, require a significant amount of mental awareness. It is also important to realize it is the games that attracted the attention of the human race both as players and spectators, require an enormous amount of physical strength than an shuffleboard game. Through the years the greatest athletes have shown incredible endurance, speed, strength endurance, dexterity and endurance.
