Sports Association List

This is a list internationally-based sports unions, each one of which is an non-governmental governing body in the particular sport. They also manage the sport on a global level, usually by drafting rules for the sport, promoting it to prospective spectators and fans and players who are aspiring to become and organising continental or world championships. Certain international sports federations, such as those of the International Swimming Federation and the International Skating Union, may manage multiple sports that are referred to in common parlance as separate sports: FINA regulates, for instance, swimming diving, synchronised diving and water polo. These are distinct "disciplines" within the single "sport" of Aquatics.

International sports federations make up an integral element to the Olympic and Paralympic movements. Each Olympic sporting event is represented by its own international sports federation. This in turn helps administer the events in its respective game during Games. For a sport to become an Olympic sport, its international sports federation must be recognised through the International Olympic Committee.

A global sports organization must be recognized through the International Paralympic Committee for its sport to qualify as paralympic. However, in the latter case, certain Paralympic Sports are managed by a separate commission of International Paralympic Committee itself, under the World Para branding, for example , track and field. for athletes with disabilities is overseen by the IPC as a whole, under the designation "World Para Athletics". Other Paralympic sports are governed within the structure of the able-bodied equivalent such as the UCI governs both ablebodied and paralympic cycling.
